Genesis of AICRP on Cotton

The Indian Central Cotton Committee (ICCC) became a statutory body and provided funds for promoting agricultural and technological research in cotton in the country. Cotton Technological Research Laboratory presently known Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT) came into being in 1924 under the aegis of the Indian Central Cotton Committee. From 1924 to 1937, the Indian Central Cotton Committee provided funds for various ‘schemes’ operated by the De¬partments of Agriculture of the Provincial Governments for cotton improvement, including breeding and variety improvement, seed multiplication, agronomy, physiology and control of pests and diseases. The pattern of funding was subsequently modified with the Provincial Governments also sharing the expenditure after 1938 until 1966, when the Indian Central Cotton Committee was wound up and the functions were transferred to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi.

With the abolition of ICCC in 1966 and funding from ICAR, the All India Co-ordinated Cotton Improvement Project (AICCIP) was launched in 1967 with its Head Quarters at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Concerted efforts by various AICCIP centers such as Ludhiana, Faridkot, Sriganganagar, Hisar, Surat, Khandwa, Indore, Akola, Nanded, Parbhani, Rahuri, Guntur (Lam), Dharwad, Raichur, Coimbatore, Srivilliputhur, Kovilpatti etc. for cotton improvement and strides that the country made in cotton production for the last five decades or more are well recorded in the history. The AICCIP knitted together the State Agricultural Universities involved in cotton research. The extensive contribution of Project on Intensification of Regional Research on Cotton, Oilseeds and Minor Millets (PIRRCOM) centers at Coimbatore and Sirsa in cotton research were commendable in crop improvement and development of various high yielding varieties and hybrids. The Central Institute for Cotton Research was established in 1976 at Nagpur, after which these two centers became Regional Stations of this institute. Right now, the All-Coordinated Research Project on Cotton (AICRP on Cotton - renamed in 2014) has network of 17 State Agricultural Universities and 22 centers.
